Happy Leap Day Everyone!
Question- I am going to DC for teh first time in about two weeks. I'll be there for 2-3 days. What are you must see DC sights? I'm a huge politics buff. Also, what do you wish you knew before visiting?
I'm thinking Supreme Ct Building, White House, Lincoln mon, Washington mon, Vietnam mon...

hp7, take 2
and when you scan the radio, I hope this song will guide you home
Misc.: I really loved alot of the small new things we got in this book. I love the radio and Potterwatch, for example. In fact, I thought for a moment it said SpellCast, no idea why, and I flipped. I live the code names as well, but they are so glaringly obvious. Remus/Romulus? KINGSly/Royal? The Jordan river? really.
I loved, loved, adored, the evolution of McGonagal. I always liked her and identified with her as a character. Caring, but still firm. Well, this book I think showed her as independent, able to take charge in a panic, and a real Gryffindor- she is highly intelligent and exceptionally loyal ("MY house!").
Death:
I was suprised Hedwig died. I don't really know why she wasn't just let out of the cage, actually. She has always been able to find Harry, even when she didn't know where he was. I suppose not having an owl was part of cutting him off from the wizarding world. But really. Hedwig? Ron didn't take Pig....
Dobby- Somehow, this upset me the most. I think because it was utterly self-less. Dobby wanted to help the only person who had shown him humanity and kindess, and in doing so, he died. Yes, Looky-he-died-at-Malfoy-manor (which I kept imagining as DD Malfoy manor). The act of digging by hand, to labor as Dobby labored for Harry- very touching. The headstone? Great.
Fred- Well, the odds were against all of the Weasleys living, weren't they? But I feel unbearably sad for George-one-ear. He really did have part of himself die. Couldn't just-redeemed Percy croak instead? (PS- Kudos to that entire scene of Reappearing Percy. OH Look! A picture! Ignore the elephant in the room! )
Crabbe- He is dead, right?
Remus/Tonks- I think I adressed already why this upset me so, and why Tonks was rash and foolhearty but understandable. Oh dear. This was upsetting, but by this point I realized it didn't matter, since I wouldn't be reading anything new about any of them, so if they died.... well. Yeah. Interesting to see the stone brought Remus back as he would want to be, and not like James as he died.
Wormtail- well that was a letdown. I was expecting something alittle more... epic?
50 nameless others- well, that was less dead then expected
Snape- WAH! I really was expecting Harry to jump into the shack and duel right there. But I do love how even in death, Snape was Dumbeldores man and still himself- yelling to take the memory. Oh Snape. Someone needs a cuddle, and not by a snake.
Voldemort- Okay, nicely done, I think. It wasn't easy, it wasn't sneaky, it was head on face to face. Some lines were a little over the top, but nice. But then... you just kill the most powerful murderer ever, the man who almost beat death, AND YOU SHOVE HIM IN A CLOSET?!?!?!?!!?!??! Am I the only one who caught this? Wouldn't you, I don't know, put it in an enchanted unbreakable cell? Just to make sure someone's not going to make a shrine out of it, or he's only sorta dead a la Harry?
Really. Did we have to start and end in a cupboard? Although, the circle of Harry putting Voldemort where he inadvertantly put Harry for so long is kinda neat. In a dorky way.
Harry- You know, I really don't know why you would say for so long that the dead are dead and gone if you are just going to bring them back from a questionable deadly coma state or pull up their spirt with a skipping stone, or have them haunt your head. Just saying.
Next up: individual points such as run and wait for 500 pages.

Spoilers for 7
" with a thousand sweet kisses, when your heart has expired, I will cover you. "
Wow. That's a boatload of good book. Luckily for me, I was sick with bronchitis for the past few days, so I was able to just lay there and read till I had finished. So, on to a review.
YES! I was glad. While many things occurred that I didn't want to see happen, I was overall so happy at the way things fell into place I couldn't complain much. It wasn't like adding in a puzzle bit that had gone missing, it was like adding a percussion section to a recorded symphony. Not only did the solo kick ass, but the whole selection was greatly improved. SO good.
Okay, to get it out of the way. Lovey stuff. I don't particularly like H/G, because as cannon as it is, I think their are some better matches for Harry with better developed characters. Luna might be interesting. HOWEVER. I give Ginny a lot of credit for sticking by Harry in his prat-ish-ness, and I did laugh (copiously) at the "We're going to die, have my virginity!" Ginny, spoiled only by the overprotective older brother. Who, consequentially, I really thought was up to things he was glad his mother couldn't see with Hermione when they ran off to find fangs. H/R was, I think, well done. The rush of emotions during war and high stress was very realistic, and I liked seeing Hermione as distraught and unable to fix herself when Ron left. It's very over-reactive teen angst, without being Caps-lock Harry again.
Okay, Remus and Tonks. I love them. I think I am alone. Be prepared for a short foray into my personal life.... I am a granola eating liberal anti-war protesting Hippie. I'm dating, and have been for four years, a Cop-solider-Republican. Yeah. So, to me, they made perfect sense and were the most REAL couple. Why? Well.... when you know that your significant other does things on a daily basis that will, if they so much as blink at the wrong time, get them killed you start to behave differently. I have, and so has my BF, distanced ourselves when we thought who we were was hurting the career of the other (When I worked for the Dem. Party, Republican boy was distant. When he joined with the army, I went into full bitch mode). For me, Remus saying why he was leaving her was the proof that he DID love her, because if he didn't why would he care? Stay and get nookie, werewolf boy. I think, in my own mind, that they did die saving each other. Tonks's rash behavior orphaned Teddy, but I believe they could find peace in knowing unlike Harry (oh, circles) upbringing, their were people who could take care of him and love him. He would be loved. Yes, the age difference always did get me. But the rapid progression of their relationship did not. They are soldiers. Soldiers who work in an area with a high fatalities. If you think the rapid marriage and childbearing is unlikely, I beg you to look at an army base and survey ages. I have seen many 18 and 19 year olds who have a child, are pregnant with another, and pretty much sacrificed their own lives to live base to base with their sig other. It's a somewhat subconscious act- if you are close to them and act like an adult, maybe they will be safer. If you lie and lie an adult life quickly, maybe it'll all go away. Is this rational? No, of course not. Is it common? I would say so. Some of the guys in my BF unit he oversees have been married since 17, after dating only for a few months. Your impending death and mutilation does crazy things to your concept of a desirable time line.
Hallows. Was this needed? Really? I mean, it explains alot, particular about the fall-from-grace and rise-to-humanity Dumbeldore(who I loved, preaching from beyond the grave and giving them what they needed in the will), but I thought a lot of it was along the lines of a new plot thread to keep interest. I didn't care for them.
I did however like many of the new characters we saw. Luna's father, for example.
Horcrux. Okay, you win, Harry was a Horcrux. Okay, you win, he did die. Sort of. Of course, the close of the King's Cross chapter was one of the best lines in a book that made me laugh often and loud.
Snape and Lily. Bah. OKay, so I should have seen this comming. AT first, I hated it, and though it was a nod to crazy pairings. But as I read it, I liked it. It explains why, someone with a bad attitude to begin with could be so tourtured by Harry- his face and being are a consistent reminder of how James-Got-The-Girl. And, his responsibility to teach him and help him is a lifetime of trying to make up for one cruel slip of the tounge. Do I believe Snape loved her? Yes, the most a man like Snape could ever love someone. Do I think it would have worked? Well, it certainly would have been interesting. They both seem particularly hot headed.

Potter Cannon Question
In re-reading HBP, I noticed that there is frequent use of the phrase "Dark Lord" to refer to Voldemort. These are used in mixed company, as well as in rooms only containing Death Eaters. It can be assumed that Dark Lord is impling some sort of reverence... beyond what Olivander says when he claims Voldemort was "terrible but great".
Now, it appears that such reverance could be used to accuse or convict someone of allegiance with Voldemort, so why would Snape use it in a D.A.D.A. class in front of Harry and other students? I could understand it if the case was made he was trying to convince Draco of his "true" allegiance and was spying for Dumbeldore (or, spying on Sumbeldore for Voldemort). However, it seems very risky.
Public post for the sake of responses.
